Chapter 5
Trigger reminders only when they help
Reminders can recover repeat purchases, but wrong timing, incorrect product assumptions or missing consent can turn them into spam.
Choose a trigger based on evidence
Good triggers include manufacturer-recommended replacement intervals, explicit customer-selected schedules, observed reorder intervals with appropriate uncertainty and product-service milestones. For example, a household water filter might have a recommended schedule, but actual usage and water conditions can change replacement timing.
Treat the first reminder as a useful service, not a disguised discount blast. Identify the purchased equipment, state the reason for the reminder, and link directly to the correct compatible replacement or an easy way to check it.
A simple reminder sequence
- At purchase: give customers a useful model-specific parts-and-care link, subject to applicable messaging rules.
- Ahead of the estimated need: send one clear reminder to eligible recipients with a verified product recommendation.
- If the customer buys: stop or reset that replenishment reminder appropriately.
- If the customer does not buy: consider a single follow-up only when relevant and lawfully permitted; do not create endless sequences.
- Always provide preference controls and an unsubscribe mechanism for marketing messages.
Respect data and consent boundaries
Do not treat a guide download, registration or service interaction as blanket permission to send marketing. Separate fulfillment of the requested resource from promotional subscriptions. Review GDPR and applicable ePrivacy/email-marketing rules for the jurisdictions you serve.
When integrating with an email platform, pass only the data needed for the intended campaign. Keep suppression and opt-out records synchronized. Avoid building an ownership dataset before you can justify what you collect and how you secure it.
Measure net lift
Open rates are not revenue. Measure repeat-purchase contribution, unsubscribes, complaints, incorrect recommendations and incremental support burden. Account for customers who would have reordered anyway.
Exercise
For one consumable, document the evidence for its reminder interval, the eligible audience, suppression rules and the single action the email should make easy.
This is an operational guide, not a claim about typical Shopify results. All numerical examples are hypothetical unless explicitly stated. Compatibility and warranty instructions should be verified against manufacturer documentation and applicable law.
